FBR Plans Rigorous Actions Against Non-Filers to Expand Tax Base

Islamabad: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) is gearing up to implement a comprehensive strategy, blending the issuance of notices to non-filers with additional administrative measures, according to a news source on November 14.

As per insider information, the FBR is embarking on an ambitious plan to incorporate one million individuals into the tax system during the initial phase. Subsequently, concerted efforts will be made to extend this outreach to 1.5 million people by 2024, with a long-term target of encompassing 6.5 million taxpayers by June 30, 2024.

The campaign against non-filers will entail the issuance of notices, coupled with the enforcement of stringent administrative and legal measures to ensure adherence to tax laws. Endorsing this initiative, Caretaker Prime Minister (PM) Anwar ul Haq Kakar has granted approval for these measures, demonstrating a commitment to fortifying the tax base.

Underscoring the urgency of the situation, FBR officials point out that only 350,000 individuals filed tax returns in the current fiscal year. This underscores the necessity for the proposed measures to bring about a substantial surge in the number of taxpayers, contributing to the overall economic stability and growth of the country.
