THE Punjab government would establish 4574 IT Laboratories in secondary and higher secondary schools in the province with a cost of Rs 4929 million.

The decision was made after Punjab government finalised a project of introducing IT education at secondary and higher secondary levels in the whole of the province, said Senior Minister Raja Riaz while speaking at a conference on Education Sector Reforms at a hotel here on Sunday. Raja Riaz said under midterm development framework 2008-09, 1050 schools would be established/upgraded, provision of libraries in 3251 schools and establishment of 144 model schools including dormitories for vulnerable group students was planned in the school education sector. He also said that under MTDF targets for higher education, rehabilitation/renovation of 70 public sector colleges under missing facilities programme, establishment/upgradation of 48 colleges and new stream of 30 model colleges was also underway. These interventions are geared towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals before 2015, he added. We want to develop our education sector in such a way that it plays a pivotal role in nation building, he said. The moot was also addressed by educationists and scholars who highlighted the role of quality education in achieving economic self-reliance.
