Islamabad: Residents of sectors G-6, G-7 continue to suffer

While the people in the Capital Development Authority (CDA) claimed that the water supply situation has somewhat improved following the recent rains and snowfall in the catchments area of Simly Dam, the residents of sectors G-6 and G-7 continued to suffer from acute water shortage.

The two sectors are the oldest in the federal capital, with the housing units constructed back in early 1960s. There are no arrangements for underground or overhead water tanks to store water in government houses in these two sectors.

During the normal times the residents of these sectors used to get water supply at least twice a day and that too for over a couple of hours each time. But since the water shortage crisis started the inhabitants of these two sectors suffered particularly because they don’t have any underground or overhead tanks to store water that has become so precious now.

During a press briefing recently about the water crisis, CDA Chairman Imtiaz Inayat Elahi announced that special emphasis would be paid to maintain a steady and regular supply of water to the residents of sectors G-6 and G-7 because of the fact that government residences in these sectors have no water storage facilities.

The residents of these sectors were in a state of extreme distress over last few days because not only the water supply timings have been cut down, but the pressure of water in the pipelines has also dropped to the extent that many parts of these sectors are hardly receiving a few bucketful of water only.

When contacted by ‘The News’ for the redressal of this severe problem, CDA (Water Management) Director General Sanaullah Aman promised that the problem would be addressed immediately. He also said that the timings of water supply to these sectors would be switched from late night or early in the morning to the day hours so that people could make arrangements to store enough water to meet their daily needs.

However till filing of this report no such steps were taken by the CDA and the residents of sectors G-6 and G-7 continued to suffer because of non-availability of water.

They have appealed to CDA Chairman Imtiaz Inayat Elahi to direct the concerned authorities to ensure that the water is supplied to these sectors during the day hours so that the inhabitants could benefit from this supply.

They urged that the water supply to these two sectors should be switched to the day hours with immediate effect.
