Lahore: CDGL releases list of standard milk shops

LAHORE: The City District Government Lahore (CDGL) has issued a notification containing the addresses of standard milk shops in the city.

In the notification, the government also announced to reduce the rates of milk and yoghurt. Cow milk with 3.5 percent fat would now be available for Rs 36 per litre instead of Rs 38 per litre and buffalo milk with five percent fat would be sold for Rs 40 per litre instead Rs 42 per litre. Yoghurt would be sold for Rs 42 against the previously announced rate (Rs 42 to Rs 45). District Officer (Environment) Tariq Zaman, District Officer (Civil Facilities) Afraz Ahmad would head 10 teams that would inspect the quality of milk being imported to the city.

District Coordination Officer Sajjad Ahmad Bhutta said the shops were established in collaboration with businessmen, adding that they would provide pure milk according to the agreement. He said no ‘foul play’ would occur, as the government would inspect the milk itself twice. He said lactometers had been provided to each shop in case any consumer wished to check the milk’s quality.

The DCO said the government had initially decided to launch about 90 shops in nine towns of the city, adding the number of shops might increase later. He said the government had started to register non-standard milk shops to ensure high quality milk from them as well, adding stern action would be taken against any shopkeeper found selling contaminated milk.

Banners: Bhutta said citizens were encouraged to register complaints against the standard milk shops, if any, to the DCO’s Complaint Cell. In the notification, he ordered the shop owners to display banners informing people aware of the shop’s presence. These banners would also display milk rates on a white-board and paste special stickers on the milk containers to inform the consumers of the milk’s high quality. All employees at the milk shops would be required to get health certificates from the government to ensure the milk was not being transferred through people suffering from any contagious diseases. The notification stated that the shop owners had voluntarily transformed their shops into standard milk shops.
