Islamabad

Capital Development Authority (CDA) is considering a proposal to construct a six-feet tall safety wall along Islamabad Expressway to discourage pedestrian crossing at undesignated places.

CDA spokesman Mustafain Kazmi while talking to APP said the CDA chairman has directed the engineering department to prepare a feasibility report of the said proposal. “The chairman has issued directives to the engineering department to prepare a comprehensive feasibility report, covering all aspects of the suggestion.”

He said majority of the residents living in adjoining colonies of the Expressway are somewhat reluctant to use the overhead bridges especially erected to avoid any road mishap, causing inconvenience for motorists using the 8-9-kilometre stretch. He said the government has spent millions of rupees to facilitate the people living across the Expressway for their safety.

The spokesman said pedestrians try to cross the road in one-go, which creates problem for the motorists and cause fatal accidents. The overhead bridges were installed on the request of the local residents for their convenience but it did not serve the purpose due to lack of education and awareness among pedestrians. Crossing the road from undesignated places is still a common practice, he added. The Expressway is one of the busiest roads, as most of the traffic coming from Lahore uses it to enter Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
