Lahore: Four alleged robbers ‘encountered’ - Naveed Yaseen - 07-02-2009 07:01 AM

LAHORE: Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) Nawankot killed four alleged robbers in an ‘encounter’ in the Hanjarwal Police precincts on Wednesday. According to the police, all the four accused were wanted for multiple robberies, murder, vehicle-snatching and other crimes. The police claimed all the four accused were proclaimed offenders, including one Muhammad Boota alias Booti, who carried head money of Rs 0.25 million announced by the Punjab government. The police said it also recovered illegal weapons from the alleged culprits. According to a statement issued by the capital city police officer (CCPO), Sub-Inspector (SI) Muhammad Bashir and other police officials were coming back from the Iqbal Town Police Station when they received a call on Control 15 that some robbers had broken into a house in Canal View Society and taken the family hostage. On receiving the information, Bashir with other police officials quickly reached the spot and asked the culprits to surrender but they started firing at the police in response, he said. The CCPO said the culprits were repeatedly offered to surrender, but they continued firing. The higher officials were informed of the situation and additional force was demanded. After which SI Asif Majeed, Muhammad Aslam, Liaqat Ali, ASI Basharat Ali and other police officials reached the spot. The police party surrounded the robbers and fired back. After an hour-long exchange of fire, the culprits were traced with the lights of vehicles. The deceased were identified, with the help of their identity cards, as Muhammad Bashir, Sabghatullah, Mauzam Din and Muhammad Boota alias Booti, the police said. staff report
