CM approves LDA governing body’s reorganisation - Salman - 10-23-2013 12:13 PM

Tuesday, October 22, 2013 - Lahore—Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has given a formal approval to reorganization of governing body of the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) and preparation of a master plan of Lahore division.

Chairing an LDA meeting here, he directed that urban planning be made in accordance with needs of modern age and a master plan be evolved for transportation, traffic, water supply, sanitation and drainage.

The chief minister also directed that a strict accountability system be devised to root out corruption from the LDA and stern action be taken without any discrimination against corrupt officers and staff and cases against them be sent to Anti-Corruption Department.

Shahbaz Sharif stressed the need for institutional reforms to transform the LDA into a public service-oriented institution in a real sense. He said an effective strategy be adopted for welfare and solution of problems of a common man. Evolving a comprehensive and effective system for purging the authority of corruption and resolving problems of a common man was of vital importance, therefore rapid progress should be made in this direction, he added.

The chief minister also directed to ensure early implementation of agreement signed with Iski of Istanbul for improving water supply, sanitation and drainage system. He also granted approval to setting up separate commissions for speedy disposal of disputes between the LDA and citizens as well as dealing with the matters regarding illegal buildings and housing schemes and directed that committee headed by Chairman Planning and development should submit its recommendations regarding constitution of the commissions within a week. Shahbaz Sharif directed that LDA be operated on the pattern of Istanbul municipality and full benefit be taken of its experience in various sectors. He also ordered the P&D Chairman to submit final proposals regarding establishment of Building Control Authority and preparation of Master Plan 2013-2035.

He said development authorities throughout the world generate their own resources for civic amenities and LDA should also evolve a comprehensive strategy for increasing its resources so that maximum facilities could be provided to citizens. The meeting also gave approval to the appointment of Khawaja Ahmad Hasaan as the Vice Chairman of the LDA.

Earlier, the LDA Director General Ahad Cheema gave a detailed briefing on the Authority relating to its future projects, implementation of bylaws, capacity-building of officials and other matters.—APP
