* Petitioner’s counsel argues his client owns the land, Highways Department claims otherwise

Staff Report

LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman on Wednesday, adjourned the hearing of a petition challenging the demolition of Aftab Aslam Plaza in Sheikhupura — allegedly at the behest of PML-N MNA Javed Latif — until March 12.

Justice Rehman disposed of two other applications regarding the land the plaza is built on and directed the Highways Department to resolve the matter in accordance with the Land Acquisition Act. Petitioner Aftab Ahmed’s counsel Azhar Siddique argued that his client’s plaza could not be demolished by the Highways Department, as his client was the rightful owner of the land.

He said the plaza was built on the owner’s land and not on land belonging to the Highways Department. Siddique alleged that MNA Javed Latif is threatening people in his constituency, which is political discrimination and on his orders the highway department wants to demolish the plaza.

He also argued that the plaza could not be demolished as his client had obtained a stay order on this regard from a civil court. Siddique told the court that the Supreme Court had acknowledged the plaza ownership of his client.
