* Authority believes move will keep check on illegal parking, increase govt revenue

By Umair Aziz

LAHORE: The City District Government Lahore (CDGL) has issued specially designed maps of notified parking stands to traffic officials, in an attempt to curb illegal parking in the city, Daily Times learnt on Monday.

The CDGL took the initiative after repeated attempts—including lodging criminal cases against violators— to check unauthorized parking stands failed. It has been given the task of ensuring smooth traffic flow on 32 of the city’s main roads which have almost 77 notified parking stands.

Government revenues: Overcharging has been reported even at approved parking stands. This coupled with the mushroom growth of illegal parking stands has caused a huge loss to the government exchequer.

The authorities, therefore, believe that the move would help in keeping a check over unauthorised parking and simultaneously help increase government revenues.

The CDGL has also printed new parking tickets. These clearly mention the site and rates of Rs 10 for a car, Rs 5 for a motorcycle and Rs 3 for a bicycle. These tickets will be issued to contractors according to serial numbers to keep a check on them. District Officer (Public Facilities) Afraz Ahmad told Daily Times that the Executive District Officer (Works) has designed the maps of the notified sites with the assistance of the technical wing. The area specified for parking and the number of vehicles have been mentioned in each map.

Ahmad said the maps had been issued to the city traffic officer and deputy superintendents of traffic police to enforce the proposed plan, adding that legal action would be taken against future violators.
