ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to stay the Lahore Development Authority’s (LDA) demolition of high-rise buildings in Lahore that have been constructed in violation of set laws.

A three-member SC bench headed by Justice Javed Iqbal was hearing a petition filed by the Builders and Developers Association against LDA’s building demolition drive that targets illegal structures in the city.

Petitioner’s counsel Aitzaz Ahsan requested the bench to stay the LDA’s operations that followed a notice published in the press a few weeks ago.

“We cannot issue a stay order with closed eyes,” Justice Javed Iqbal said, adding that the court would hear other parties in the case as well.

Ahsan submitted that LDA was misusing the court’s orders and said the authority issued vacating notices to inhabitants by making the commission’s report as a base. The counsel maintained that building owners would have to bear huge losses, but the bench said that it had to “work according to the law”. staff report
