LAHORE: Lahore High Court Chief Justice Khawaja Muhammad Sharif on Wednesday took suo motu notice of an alleged illegal land acquisition for widening a road in Multan. He also asked for minutes of a meeting held between the Multan commissioner and the National Highway Authority (NHA). The LHC CJ adjourned the hearing until Jan 21 and directed the commissioner to submit the meeting’s minutes related to the decision regarding the widening of the road. Appearing on notice on Wednesday, the Multan commissioner stated that the road-widening project was being supervised by the NHA, adding that the meeting had not taken any discriminatory decision. The CJ had taken suo motu action on an application submitted to him during his visit to the Multan Bar Association. The applicant stated that land for widening the road from Kalma Chowk to Tariq Road in Multan should have been acquired from both sides of the road, but the commissioner Multan was bent upon acquiring 60 to 87 feet of land from the left side only. staff report
