A large segment of population living in walled city areas near Shah Alam Market are facing serious hardships due to the limited time of the only parking plaza in Rang Mehal.

A delegation of residents told the correspondent that the Shah Alam Parking Plaza is the only parking plaza in Walled city where residents of several localities i.e. Delhi Gate, Kashmiri Bazaar, Shah Alami Gate, Pani Wala Talab, Bhatti Gate etc park their vehicles 24 hours a day.

They said since the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) took over the management of plaza some weeks ago, officials at the parking started closing it at 10pm, causing serious inconvenience to citizens.

Malik Tariq, one of the residents of Rang Mehal said earlier the plaza contractors had issued monthly passes to residents and they could park their vehicles in the plaza at any time of the day. “Now we have to park our vehicles in the plaza before 10.00 p.m. and in case of an emergency we can not take our vehicles out until morning when the plaza opens,” he maintained.

Badar, another resident said the area falls in the constituency of Mian Hamza Shahbaz who was elected unopposed and later forgot to solve problems and issues of the people of his constituency. Residents, he said, have appealed to Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to direct LDA authorities to issue monthly passes to residents so that they can park their vehicles in the plaza at any time in 24 hours.

When contacted, Asif, lift operator of the plaza, said that the plaza lacks security arrangements due to which the LDA management stopped issuing monthly passes and decreased the time for using the plaza. He said now security cameras were being installed in the plaza and hopefully the management will start issuing monthly passes to residents besides allowing them to use the parking facilities in the plaza for 24 hours.
