ISLAMABAD: Former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf has reportedly funnelled a large amount of money to his former aides in the country in order to improve his image, as he is planning a return to the country’s political scene.

An Asia Times Online report said Musharraf was planning to launch a new political party and had recently “funnelled large sums of money into the coffers of former aides to promote his cause.

“These include former minister for information Sheikh Rasheed, who ...has been paid $1 million — the same amount that went to a public relations team to boost Musharraf’s image,” the report said.

The report also revealed that the former general had received millions of dollars in donations from various corporate biggies and his close associates. “Insiders say that Musharraf has vast wealth, much of it accumulated through donations from individuals (these, some say, include Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi and corporations to aid previous election campaigns). There are reports that Musharraf received $30 million from the UAE via one of its top bankers, and another $3 million from a Pakistani cellular phone company,” it added.
