KARACHI: In these troubled times of acute power shortage in the country, it is high time the government started considering alternative energy sources of which solar energy makes a powerful candidate, said Sikander Mir Kohler, Honorary Investment Counselor in Germany.

Speaking at a meeting at the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Saturday, he said Germany is the pioneer in solar energy solutions. He said a German company, AZUR Solar GmbH, has particularly designed solar energy generating technology that will help Pakistan get rid of the energy crisis.

He said due to the high intensity of heat and sun in Pakistan, it is a very profitable option for the country.

The investment counselor substantiated his argument by saying that the IMF is pressurizing Pakistan’s government to take away the huge subsidy from electricity. “If this happens, the cost of our electricity will go up and become as expensive as solar energy only,” he said. “So it is time we start looking for other hassle free forms of energy generation,” he added.

The stakeholders present at the meeting said solar energy is a very expensive source of energy and not viable in Pakistan. Also the model of technology proposed by Azur will not be feasible for residential and factory purposes. They feel that it is essential that the government starts thinking about alternative energy sources to conserve our industries and economy.
