* PML-N chief says passing NRO will be akin to legalising corruption

LAHORE: The government should not have tabled the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) in parliament, as it has put itself, the opposition and the nation to test by doing so, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz chief Nawaz Sharif said on Saturday.

Talking to the media after offering condolences over the death of Sohail Zia Butt’s father, he said the NRO was a difficult test for parliament and should not be passed through the House.

“If the ordinance is approved by parliament, it will bring a bad name [to Pakistan] and set a bad precedent. The world will point fingers at Pakistan,” he said. “It will blemish the parliament’s reputation forever,” the PML-N leader said. Nawaz said passing the bill was akin to legalising corruption in the country.

He said the time had come for the nation to break its “beggar’s bowl” and learn to stand on its own feet through properly utilising its own resources.

He said the government must cut its expenditures, the people should pay taxes honestly and work hard so that the country could become economically independent.

He said foreign aid had done no wonders for the country as the people were still plagued by load shedding, poverty and unemployment. ap
