ISLAMABAD: The daredevil terrorist attack on military headquarters in Rawalpindi took the nation by surprise on Saturday. The attack was most disturbing and alarming. The terrorists killed chief of the GHQ security - Brigadier Anwar - and one Lt. Colonel Wasim. Many others embraced Shahadat, while many terrorists were also gunned down.

The attack on the GHQ has taken the war on terror to new heights, as terrorists seemed to have appeared in disguise by wearing military uniforms.

The Saturday attack was the third of its kind, though the earlier two attacks took place some years back were carried out on outermost pickets established to check any unlawful entrants.

Thankfully, the terrorists did not stuff the van with heavy explosives as in such a case many more soldiers would have embraced Shahadat in their noble war to defend their country.

Some pro-Islamist extremists like late Abbasi and Mustansar Billa made similar abortive plans to carry out attacks on GHQ. However, the latest attack on GHQ was the most lethal and well planned before its execution.

The forces behind this attack might be many with their coordinated efforts, as keeping hostage many soldiers in the security building adjacent to the GHQ unfolded the designs of the terrorists. They were not only armed with sophisticated weapons but they came on a “death-mission.”

No one knows more than Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani about the outfits of the terrorists working in and outside Pakistan because of his rich experience as former DG ISI. He must have full knowledge of such elements, though many say that those who attacked GHQ belong to Southern Punjab or Wazirabad areas.
