ISLAMABAD: Two fertiliser plants — Fatima Fertiliser in Rahim Yar Khan and Engro Chemicals at Deharki — are near completion and expected to be operational by November this year and October 2010 respectively.

These plants will produce more than one million tons of fertiliser annually, which will be sufficient to meet farmers’ demand locally, according to the Ministry of Industries and Production.

According to a senior official of the ministry, at present 10 large fertiliser plants are running in the private sector but there is a huge demand for fertiliser in the country.

All the fertiliser plants are producing at about 100 per cent of their installed capacity but it is not enough to meet the demand of farmers, which increases every season.

The government is giving incentives under the Fertiliser Policy 2001 ie supply of feed gas at concessionary rates for fertiliser plants.

The government is working hard to solve power and gas problems as it is also essential for the running and development of industries besides the usage of labour.

The Ministry of Industries and Production is monitoring the implementation of the project, the official said
