With the cooperation of the federal government, 500 CNG buses will ply on the roads of Karachi by December this year.

CDGK’s Mass Transit Cell will implement the CNG buses project with the cooperation of the private sector. The federal government has approved Rs2.5 billion for 4,000 CNG buses for Karachi. The prequalification of the operators of the CNG buses of the private sector has started.

A meeting of the Implementation Regulatory Committee, which has been established especially for CNG buses, was held under the supervision of District Coordination Officer (DCO), Jawed Hanif Khan, at his office.

The DCO said that the CDGK was trying its best to improve the public transport facilities and 50 CNG buses had already been inducted in the city. Director General Karachi Mass Transit Cell, CDGK Malik Zaheer-ul-Islam, informed the meeting that 500 to 1,000 buses would ply on 40 routes in Karachi in 2010 as part of 4,000 CNG buses.

He said that the Karachi Mass Transit Cell had identified the routes and each bus could carry 70 to 100 commuters.
