Work in DHA resumes after August

Staff Report

KARACHI: The second phase of development work in Defence Housing Authority (DHA) and Cantonment Board Clifton (CBC) will start after August, due to the possibility of more monsoon rains, Daily Times has learnt.

“We have completed the first phase of work in all of DHA and CBC within the set time limit, but it is not possible to initiate the second phase at a time when there are forecasts of more rains,” said Brig. Iftikhar Haider, who is in charge of the Main Trunk Drainage Project and other development work.

After the recent showers in the city, the board is trying to examine flaws in the newly established drainage system and does not want to leave any room for error in the second phase of the project. “We are going through a planning process and the work will only be carried out after thorough examination of the rest of the project,” said Haider. The actual plan of the ongoing development was set and designed in three phases, and while work on Phase I was completed within its deadline of July 31, Phase II of the project is expected to be completed by 2010. The second phase will include the leveling of roads where sewerage lines have been laid and the remodeling of roads to improve the traffic flow.

Bashir Lakhani of Techno-Consultant International, the consultants for the project, while talking to Daily Times, said that the project had a deadline of 2010, by which all major developmental work in DHA will be completed. “We will plan and design the second phase by October this year, so that it can be completed as early as possible,” said Lakhani.
