ISLAMABAD: President Parvez Musharraf said on Wednesday that as it was the government’s right to table the impeachment motion against him, he also had the right to defend his actions.

He expressed this during a meeting with his legal experts and aides at the Presidential Camp Office. Those who met him included PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Parvez Elahi, Hamid Nasir Chattha and others.

According to sources in the Presidency, the prevailing political situation and the impeachment issue were discussed in the meeting. The sources quoted the president as saying that he was a staunch supporter of democracy and he did not want to clash with any institution. “My doors are open for everyone in the larger national interests,” he was quoted as saying.

The president said if an impeachment motion was tabled against him in parliament, he would defend his position there, the sources said. The president said he would not allow destabilising the country.

The sources added that during the meeting Hamid Nasir Chattha suggested the president not to take any decision in haste. He suggested that the Presidency should wait for the strategy of the PML-N and the PPP to come forward and then a counter strategy should be chalked out, the sources said. They further said the PML-Q leadership assured the president of their support against the possible impeachment motion.
