THE National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Punjab has arrested a cashier of Government Transport Department Punjab allegedly for misappropriation of 450 million of rupees from the official accounts of the department.

Accused Muhammad Shamshad Gulzar, in connivance with Muhammad Shahnwaz, section officer of Transport Department and others, embezzled Rs. 450 million from the government funds allocated for the establishment of underground Rail Transport System for the city of Lahore.

The inquiry against accused Shamshad and others was authorized on February 14, 2008. Only Muhammad Shahmshad Gullzar had joined the inquiry while others were absconded.

The NAB Punjab already arrested M. Shahnawaz and had recovered cash and certificates worth of Rs. 13.6 million, 680 grams of gold and documents of 32 urban properties purchased by the accused amounting to Rs. 250 Million.

The accused, in connivance with each other, managed the approval of the bills from the office of Accountant General Punjab and encashed them from the State Bank of Pakistan and embezzled the amount.

Accused Muhammad Shamshad Gulzar shifted the cash to his home in Dhobi Mandi, Old Anarkali, Lahore, with the abetment of his brother Afzal Gulzar who had already been arrested by the NAB. The accused has been produced before the Accountability Court and a 14-day remand has been granted by the Accountability Court.
