KARACHI: Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) has geared up the installation of a 29-kilometer long and 36-inch diameter water pipeline for Malir Town.

KWSB Additional Vice Chairman Imamuddin Shahzad has issued directives to the KWSB team working on the project while paying a surprise visit to the site.

Talking to Daily Times, Shahzad said that Malir once used to provide plenty of vegetables and fresh fruits to the citizens but due to certain reasons, including lack of rain and the destruction of old water pipelines in the area, agricultural activities have shrunk while the increased population has also contributed to the water shortage. “Despite the fact that most citizens have yet to settle their water dues and KWSB is passing through the worst financial crunch, the board is fully determined to extend as many facilities to the citizens as possible,” he said. He also added that the citizens should also realise the importance of settling water dues on time, as without adequate finances the utility would lose its capacity to improve water and sanitation as well as the addition of essential infrastructures. Shahzad said that the installation of the 29-km long and 36-inch diameter pipeline is not an easy job but the board has not only started the installation at a cost of Rs 1 billion but the project is now nearing completion. The pipeline would be providing the residents of Malir Town with 10 million gallons of water daily. irfan aligi
