ISLAMABAD: The Large Scale Manufacturing (LSM) in the first ten months of the outgoing fiscal recorded an overall negative growth of 8.24 per cent, said Federal Bureau of Statistics on Thursday.

The Large Scale Manufacturing including quantum index numbers of Oil Companies Advisory Committee (OCAC) and Ministry of Industry & Production (MOIP) in the first ten months of fiscal 2008-2009 registered a negative growth with OCAC showing a negative growth of 9.17, ministry of industries 8.19 and provincial industrial data showing a decline of 8.16 per cent.

The federal budget announced last week reported negative growth of 3.3 per cent with LSM 7.7 per cent in the first nine months of outgoing fiscal year 2008-09 while for the coming year 2009-10, the federal budget estimated a overall manufacturing growth of 1.8 per cent with LSM estimate of only one per cent.

The Federal Bureau of Statistics (FBS) compiled industrial data of 54 large scale manufacturing while MOIP compiled a data of 35 industries and OCAC provide production data of the petroleum sector.

The OCAC data shows a negative growth of 9.17 per cent. All the petroleum products including motor sprit, jet fuel, kerosene, high speed diesel, diesel oil, furnace, lubricating oil, jut batching oil, solvent naphtha and LPG registered a negative growth when compared with the corresponding period, said the FBS data.

Ministry of Industry index registered a negative growth of 8.19 percent comprising 35 main industries in the quantum index numbers of large scale manufacturing, it added.

The industries that showed a positive growth include cigarette (11.16), sacking (31.69), paperboard (0.06) jute goods (6.82), soda ash (0.28) phosphatic fertilizer (34.94), glass plates and sheets (11.10), cement (5.56), coke and Pakistan steel (46.30) and tractors (11.87).

Those remained in negative side are sugar (32.10), cotton yarn (0.11), cotton cloth (0.17), hessian (34.19), nitrogenous fertilizer (0.89) caustic soda (1.72), pig iron (15.33), billets/ingots (33.84), C R sheets/strips/coils/plates (27.49), trucks (34.77), buses (48.42), jeeps and cars (48.64), Light Commercial Vehicles (17.52) motorcycles (17.67) and others (37.43), the figures said.

According to FBS data following industries showed a negative growth; vegetable ghee (5.63), cooking oil (2.6), tea blended (1.75), wheat and gain milling (2.62), beverages (0.22), woolen & carpet yarn (17.72), knitting wool (16.74), upper leather (8.03), galenicals (100), ointment (0.29), toilet soaps (16.82), sulphuric acid (6.26), chlorine (7.78), synthetic resins (7.03), cycle tyres (32.08), cycle tubes (2.17), diesel engines (0.52), chaff cutter (3.23), sugarcane machine (25.19), power looms (24.02), bobbin & shuttles (22.62), refrigerators (10.69), deep freezers (14.58), air conditioner (58.36), electric bulbs (30.21), electric tubes (36.14), electric fans (0.33), electric motors (15.39), electric meters (8.36), switch gears (23.18), electric transformers (16.76), TV sets (39.54), sewing machines (11.24) and bicycles (28.92).

Similarly the industries in FBS data showing positive growth include starch and its products (5.89), sole leather (39.76), tablets (0.31), footwear (20.18), cotton (ginned) (1.41), plywood (41.18), liquids/syrups (10.20), capsules (3.26), injections (7.95), soaps & detergents (8.55), paints & varnishes (S) (20.58), paints & varnishes (L) (13.07), hydrochloric acid (11.44), polishes & creams (1), matches (3.45), motor tubes (53.72), safety razor blades (9.5) and wheat thrashers (152.17).
