Majority of all Pakistanis go to general stores to purchase grocery items, reveals a survey by Gilani Research Foundation, carried out by Gallup Pakistan.

A higher percentage of urbanites buy groceries from utility stores and wholesale shops as compared to the ruralites, who mostly purchase these items from general stores, it said.

A nationally representative sample of men and women from across the country were read out a lit of grocery items and asked if they buy them from a utility store, a general store or a wholesale shop.

The results show that in case of rice, 64 per cent respondents buy it from general stores, 22 per cent from utility store, and 12 per cent said they buy it from a wholesale shop. One per cent gave no response.

For pulses, majority (69 per cent) of the respondents go to general stores, where as 20 per cent buy them from utility stores and 11 per cent prefer wholesale shops.

According to 66 per cent of the respondents, they buy

sugar from general stores, 21

per cent claimed to buy it from utility stores and the remaining 13 per cent go to wholesale shops.

Wheat is bought from general stores by 68 per cent of the respondents and from utility stores by 16 per cent while 15 per cent like to buy wheat from wholesale shops. One per cent gave no response.

Moreover, 73 per cent claimed they buy other stuff like soaps, detergents, etc, from a general store and 14 per cent said they go to utility stores, while 13 per cent of the respondents buy soaps and detergents from a wholesale shop. One per cent gave no response.

When the respondents were asked about cooking oil, majority (68 per cent) said they buy it from a general store, 17 per cent from a utility store where as 14 per cent said they purchase it from wholesale shops.

The data reveals that a proportionately higher percentage of urbanites prefer going to utility stores to buy grocery items.
