ISLAMABAD: A three-member Pakistani delegation is leaving for Istanbul today (Friday) to sign a Gas Sale-Purchase Agreement with Iran, Petroleum Adviser Dr Asim Hussain announced during a press conference on Thursday. Pakistan’s Inter-State Gas Company would sign the agreement with its Iranian counterparts under international rules and regulations. “If the gas agreement was signed in Islamabad, it would have been in accordance with the Pakistan law and if it were signed in Tehran, it would have been under the Iranian law, that is why chose a neutral ground,” the adviser said. Terming the agreement a landmark achievement of the government, he said the country was confronting power shortfall and urgently needed gas to help the country overcome the shortage. He said the country would begin local gas production from three offshore wells soon, adding that the import of Iranian gas would help the government expand the facility to other areas of the country. The project would cost $1.2 billion, he said. Asim said the Sui Northern Gas Pipeline Company (SNGPL) had uncovered gas thefts of Rs 695.556 million, adding that some senior SNGPL officials were also involved. He said services of the corrupt officials had been terminated. ijaz kakakhel
