Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) has launched the concept of Zero Energy Homes (ZEH) for increasing level of energy efficiency in the fabric of new homes that would be fitted with renewable energy systems.

According to a press release issued here Wednesday AEDB would soon launch an awareness campaign for the new concept. The ZEH Concept combines state-of-the-art, energy-efficient construction techniques and equipment with renewable energy systems to return as much energy as it takes on an annual basis. AEDB Chief Executive Officer Mr Arif Alaudin, while launching the concept said, “The Zero Energy Buildings model is an important and strategic move given the current trend of escalating energy costs and resource crunch.” As the country’s focal body on renewable energy, AEDB, Alaudin said, always remained at the forefront of supporting, promoting, and participating in initiatives, which contribute to our nation’s development.

It is important to incorporate this concept into the building codes because cost-effective energy reduction in a building occurs during the design process through building orientation, day lighting, improved thermal envelope performance, cool roof, external overhang or shading and continuous air barrier.

Additionally, Zero Energy Buildings are usually built with significant energy-saving features. The heating and cooling loads are cut by using high-efficiency equipment, added insulation, high-efficiency windows and natural ventilation.

“Once a house as been constructed, there is little chance to significantly upgrade its energy performance for at least the next 20 years,” Alaudin said while stressing on the need for amending the building codes.
