UPS demand up, quality down — ‘simple economics’

LAHORE: Soon after an increase in the demand for uninterrupted power supply (UPS) units and emergency lights, manufacturers started using substandard parts in them due to which the units are now less efficient and last less longer than what manufacturers claim. The efficiency of local UPS units is reportedly a mere 20 percent, which means that they consume five times the energy they store. Due to frequent, unscheduled load shedding and overload shedding, the alternate power units also do not get completely recharged. According to Qadeer Ahmad, a UPS vendor, the UPS units take at least two to three hours to get recharged and don’t work if they do not get that much power. Talking to Daily Times, Ahmed said that most manufacturers did not follow quality standards because of the high demand and good sales. staff report
