RAWALPINDI - While expressing complete solidarity with the Ghakar Plaza affectees, the traders community of Rawalpindi Friday gave a deadline of 15 days to Punjab government for compensation package of Rs125 million. If the package is not handed over to the affected shopkeepers in the stipulated time, the entire business community of the city would stage a sit-in in front of the Punjab House.
President Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) Syed Asad Mashadi stated this in a press conference at the site of demolished Gakhar Plaza on Friday. On the occasion, Vice President of the Chamber Imtiaz Chaudhary, President Anjuman tajran Cantt Shiekh Hafeez, Chairman Action Committee Ghakar Plaza Zia Ullah , Secretary Tanvir Chaudhary and hundred of affected traders were also present.
He said that soon after the incident, Chief Minister Punjab Mian Shahbaz Sharif constituted a committee to take review of the loss. The committee assessed the damage of Rs 125 million and the report was submitted to CM but unfortunately Governor Rule was imposed in Punjab and the matter was put in the doldrums. “After the reinstatement of Punjab government, the affected traders of Ghakar Plaza took a sigh of relief but after passage of two months, their hopes re going to die out,” he added.
He said that Secretary Defence assured him that the site plan for reconstruction of Gakhar Plaza would be approved in just one day but now some officials in Cantonment Board are using delaying tactics and this would not be tolerated, President RCCI warned.
