ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Shaukat Aziz pushed the Ports and Shipping Ministry in 2005 to lease out a 20-hectares of land – owned by the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) – to the US consulate in Karachi at a rate ‘much lower’ than the market price, KPT Chairman Nasreen Haq claimed on Friday.

Addressing a meeting of the National Assembly Public Accounts Committee (PAC), the KPT chairman said Prime Minister’s Secretariat directed the Ports and Shipping Ministry in 2005 to identify and lease out 20 hectares of KPT land to the US consulate for 99 years at the rate of Rs 15,000 per square yard – at a time when the KPT was demanding Rs 220,000 per square yard plus Rs 217 per square yard as yearly rent. tahir niaz
