The closing ceremony of a two-day international workshop on ‘Membrane Technology for Wastewater Reclamation and Reuse’ was held here at School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (SCEE) on Wednesday. According to a press release, Secretary Ministry of Science and Technology Kashif Murtaza was the chief guest. Dr C. Visvanathan, Professor of Environmental Engineering and Management Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Bangkok, was the keynote speaker. Lieutenant General Muhammad Asghar Rector NUST presided over the event.

Kashif Murtaza in his address said that year 2009 is being celebrated as the year of environment. Pakistan is running short of water resources and we should evaluate the performance of water sector, its usage and management. It is very important to disseminate valuable environmental information to students and professionals and hope that our young engineers and scientists would introduce innovative ideas to make this technology more valuable.

Rector NUST Lieutenant General Muhammad Asghar expressed that membrane technology would provide an effective solution to the problem of water wastage and mismanagement that have made Pakistan a water scarce country and would provide clean water for reuse from wastewater. He hoped that this workshop would be used as a wake up call for the state and would open doors for research on membrane technology in industry.
