Islamabad: National Highway Authority has decided to build an elevated flyover in Rawalpindi instead of a bypass on GT Road (N-5), a source in the authority told this agency on Tuesday.

The source said that as the land for Rawalpindi Bypass has not been acquired so far, now the NHA intends to provide a 4-lane flyover facility on the section of N-5 passing through Rawalpindi city on BOT basis.

He said that advertisement, seeking expression of interest for the purpose appeared in the press.

He said that since the flyover is to be constructed on NHA’s Right-of-Way, the requirement of land acquisition would be minimal and the project would be completed by 2014. The elevated flyover will be 14 kilometres long and built on at an estimated cost of Rs18 billion, he added.

The NHA official said the plan to construct Rawalpindi Bypass has been shelved, as the government is finding it hard to finance the 28-kilometer long project near Tarnol. Rawalpindi Bypass project was approved in early 2007 to ease traffic congestion and would have cost Rs3.06 billion and was to be completed by end of 2009.
