ISLAMABAD: The government Friday offered 1000 scholarships to Afghan students to study here in almost all disciplines while the first batch of students would be given admissions during the incumbent year.

Under the phased programme, as many as two hundred Afghan students will join Pakistani universities this year. The first batch will get admissions in the academic year starting from September 2009.

This was decided at a meeting held here on Friday between the Afghan delegation led by Mohammad Saddique Patman, Deputy Minister for Education, and a Pakistani team led by Prof. Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed, Member (Operations and Planning), Higher Education Commission (HEC) comprising senior officials of the Ministry of Education, Planning Commission, Foreign Office and the HEC.

The scholarships will be given in almost all the disciplines with a particular focus on Engineering, Medicine and Agriculture as desired by the Afghan delegation. The other important areas include Pharmacy, Computer Science, Social Sciences, Business Education and Language Studies etc.

The meeting agreed that the Afghan students will require to produce an equivalent academic certificate necessary for getting admission in Pakistani universities besides undergoing a language course in Pakistan before starting course of study.
