KARACHI: The Signal Free Corridors (SFC) recently introduced in the city can only fulfil the needs of the citizens for a decade; this means that the problems that are currently being addressed by the City District Government Karachi (CDGK) will resurface after a decade.

It is imperative that the city must have its own Mass Transit System (MTS) for long-term solutions, stated City Nazim Mustafa Kamal on Wednesday. Kamal said that just three years ago, the citizens were facing great discomfort due to traffic gridlocks but when the Haq Parast leadership took administrative control of CDGK, the SFC concept was introduced that proved to be highly efficient. However, the existing SFCs can not be considered as permanent solutions, which can only be resolved through the introduction of a MTS in the city.

Kamal stated that the population graph of Karachi is constantly rising, burdening the city’s limited resources. He said that as the increase in population could not be checked, measures to prepare the city for future challenges should be taken immediately. In case the ongoing development of the city is halted, the impact of this would engulf the entire country.

While defining the importance of water and sewerage infrastructure, Kamal said that since the city does not have any nearby river, paucity of water is a constant nuisance. The CDGK, sensing the gravity of the problem, has nearly completed the laying of infrastructure for a water and sewerage system, especially in all four industrial zones of the city in order to boost economic and trade activities. staff report
