Federal Minister for Environment Hameedullah Jan Afridi launched the country’s first-ever electric motorcycle at the Enercon building here on Thursday.

Ministry of Environment Additional Secretary Ishtiaq Ahmad Khan, the Enercon managing director and senior officers of the Ministry of Environment attended the ceremony.

According to details provided by the spokesman of the ministry, the electric motorcycle runs on an electric motor of 600 Watts powered by three rechargeable batteries of 16 Volts each.

There is no engine and hence the operation of the electric motorcycle is without any pollution and noise. It has a range of 50 kilometres on full charge of batteries, which take about four-and-a-half hours to come up to full charge.

The per kilometre cost of operation is 16 paisas on commercial rates and 12 paisas on domestic rates of electricity. It performs satisfactorily in plain areas and can carry two people of up to total weight of 180 kilograms. It, however, tends to slow down on gradients. The retail price is presently Rs34,000 per unit.

In the launching ceremony, the federal minister for environment appreciated the efforts of the management of the company based in Multan for introducing the electric motorcycle in Pakistan.
