LAHORE: The Model Town Society (MTS) has initiated a project to widen the roads linking a newly constructed superstore to avoid traffic jams in the residential area.

The roads linking the area to E, G, P, K, L and M blocks as well as Faisal Town are being widened from 14 feet to 20 feet. The area’s side-streets are also being widened to ensure that no traffic jams occur.

Height: The contracters were also instructed to develop footpaths and greenbelts along the roads. Model Town Residents Association (MTRA) President Amir Azam was of the view that the superstore’s presence in the society could only prove harmful for the residents. He said it would damage the society’s atmosphere. He said thousands of additional vehicles, including heavy trucks, were visiting the facility. He said the MTRA had advised the administration against the construction of the superstore.

He said the building’s height was a violation of the society’s bylaws, adding that the store was creating a lot of solid and liquid waste, which created excessive burden on the society’s decades-old sanitation system. He said the main sewerage pipe carried the society’s drained water into a nullah in Township, adding that it had collapsed several times. He said the MTRA had demanded the replacement of about 30 feet of pipe.

MTS President Col ® Tahir Kardar said there were only a few people in the society who opposed the store, adding that most residents were thrilled to have a wholesale store located so close to their residence. He said the store’s presence was also generating a lot of economic activity within Model Town, which also provided monetary benefits to the MTS. He said widening the roads was essential to keep the residents satisfied. He said the project would be completed within a few weeks.
