LAHORE: The presence of thousands of encroachments near the city’s historical monuments is not only affecting the city’s beauty, but is also engendering a culture of corruption and crime, prominent artist and art historian professor Dr Ejaz Anwar said on Wednesday. He said such a culture might have long-term negative effects on the society. He said these encroachments had been developed in collaboration with various government agencies. He said the agencies facilitated illegal occupants in terms of water, electricity, telephone supplies and by providing other services. He said the governments of other countries considered historical monuments as national assets. He said they maintained such sites and developed them into tourist resorts, adding that the situation was otherwise in Lahore. staff report
