LAHORE: Lahore Police has rounded up no less than 140 criminal gangs and arrested 441 criminals, recovered looted property worth Rs 165.4 million and as many as 4,270 court absconders and proclaimed offenders have been nabbed during the current year, according to a handout issued by the Police Department on Sunday.

The handout stated that 1,298 cases had been traced to 441 accused criminals, including five cases of dacoity-cum-murder, 13 of dacoity, 578 cases of robbery, 307 cases of burglary and 389 miscellaneous cases. During the campaign against illegal weapons, 1,285 cases were registered and 1,288 accused criminals were arrested. Lahore police followed that with the recovery of five Kalashnikovs, 59 rifles, 59 guns, 1,056 pistols and revolvers, nine carbines, three mousers, four bombs, 17 daggers and more than 7,000 bullets from the criminal’s possession. 1,640 drug dealers were arrested and 8 kg heroin, 347 kg hasheesh, 23 kg opium and 5,399 bottles of liquor were seized from them.

Meanwhile, Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Haji Habibur Rahman has directed the police force to ensure the installation of close circuit cameras (CCTV) in their respective areas and said that stern action would be taken in case of any negligence.
