LAHORE

SWEETS became the most sought-after edible in the City after the Prime Minister’s speech was aired early in the morning.

People thronged sweet shops after they learnt that the prime minister has announced reinstating the deposed chief justice. Great rush of buyers was seen at almost every sweet shop of the City throughout the day. Sweet shops did a roaring business as their sales registered an unexpected jump.

Sale of sweet shops registered a sudden increase and famous sweet shops had to ask for fresh supplies to ensure sweets availability. Shop managers of a famous sweets brand had conveyed the prospect of quick sale on Monday to their head office. The News learnt that some branches of the said company located in office districts had to call for fresh supplies in the afternoon.

In some areas of the city, sweet shops owners increased the price of their products due to unexpected high demand. However, chains of famous sweet shops did not change their rates. They, however, faced supply shortage at their outlets for a while.

Hameed, shop manager of a famous sweets brand, told The News that sweets were sold out until noon and they had to ask the head office to send more sweets. He pointed out that people who visited in the morning to purchase breakfast items such as eggs, bread, butter and jam also purchased sweets. The sale of sweets continued without any interval throughout day, he said adding that buyers keep coming until evening.

Ghufrran Malik, the shop incharge of another famous sweets brand, said that roaring sales were recorded on Monday. He said the sale of sweets was slightly higher on Monday than the sales of sweets after Musharraf resignation. He observed that sweet shops always did good business on such occasions. He said people from every walk of life bought sweets according to their purchasing power.
