LAHORE: The Punjab government has given approval for the third time to rebuild and widen PECO Road at a revised cost of Rs 253.342 million, connecting the Canal Bank road via Maulana Shaukat Ali Road on one side and Ferozepur Road on the other side, official sources disclosed here Monday. The PECO Road's reconstruction was first approved in January 2008 and re-approved in March 2008 at a cost of Rs 172.793 million, but the work could not be awarded due to a ban on new projects due to paucity of funds. The project has been re-submitted to the competent authority again which has finally granted approval. Costing Rs 80.549 million more, almost 50 per cent addition over last year estimates, the planners deleted estimates for street lights which would be done by the local TMAs out of their own funds. Because of upward fluctuation in the cost, a revised PC-I of the project will have to be submitted for clearance, sources said. Starting from March 2009, the project will be completed in 15 months. A widened PECO road, now lying in a dilapidated condition, will further kick up development of northern Lahore and facilitate the people because new links including Sabzi Mandi Link, Model Town Kutchery Link, PEL Factory Link and Drain Link, besides connecting the population of the area to Canal Bank Road, sources said.
