SSP Operations Chaudhry Shafiq Ahmed had said that Lahore police have arrested two people involved in making fake currency notes, tickets and identity cards and recovered currency notes, stamps and other documents worth Rs75 million from their possession.

Addressing a press conference on Monday at the Police Lines, Qila Gujjar Singh, the SSP said ring leader Muhammad Ashraf of Gulshan-e-Ravi and one of his accomplices Muhammad Akram of Shafiqabad were arrested from Moon Market, Iqbal Town, while their third accomplice Farasat Chohan had absconded.

Iqbal Town police on the information of the arrested criminals, recovered fake currency notes, currency making machines and dyeing papers, he said, adding that counterfeit Pakistani currency worth Rs2 million, bogus arms license, driving licenses and insurance tickets worth Rs5 million and bogus dollars worth Rs42.5 million were also recovered from the criminals. Printing plates of different types of stamp papers and paper, used in printing currency, were also recovered from them, said the SSP.

All the abovementioned items and two printing machines were also put on display at the venue of the press conference. Flanked by Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi, SP Iqbal Town Division, SSP Operations Ch Shafiq Ahmed said the accused were also previously involved in the same cases but after they were released from jail, they again started business of making fake currency. He said efforts were being made for the arrest of Hamidullah Pathan of NWFP, the partner of the accused, and his accomplices.

Ch Shafiq said during the preliminary investigation, the accused had informed that they had installed press machines at a rented shop at Sardar Chappal Chowk near Bilal Ganj to make the bogus currency and other material. Replying to the questions, SSP said those who were killed in encounters the day before were involved in heinous crimes and also resorted to fire at the raiding police team.
