The first multi-storey parking plaza of the City District Government Karachi (CDGK), with a capacity for 800 vehicles and 300 bikes, will be made operational by February 20, City Nazim Mustafa Kamal said during a visit to the plaza in Saddar.

The project costs Rs700 million. Kamal was told that besides parking for vehicles, the plaza also provides space for offices, as well as a shopping centre. Modern scanning machines and cameras will be used to monitor all visitors and the plaza will be equipped with standby generators and a heavy lift for vehicles.

The Nazim said that the project should be completed within a month, and directed the allotment of a separate place for a vehicle wash at each floor. He asked the EDO Transport to conduct a complete survey of the entire area before opening the plaza so that Empress Market and other streets in Saddar could be declared parking-free zones. He said a detailed plan should also be forwarded to the DIG Traffic Police (Karachi) before the formal inauguration of the plaza.

Shopkeepers of Shahabuddin Market, Saddar, also met the Nazim and apprised him of their problems. He assured them that the city government would soon start development work on a second parking plaza in the area. It would have its own resources, and the original allottees of Shahabuddin Market would be given shops with ownership rights.
