RAWALPINDI: Rawal Town Municipal Administration (RTMA) in collaboration with police on Thursday launched a grand operation against encroachments and removed billboards on the pavements and seized pushcarts and goods displayed on the footpaths and roads. Under the supervision of Town Officer Regulation Aftab Chohan, RTMA personnel seized pushcarts and goods displayed on them and at the illegal stalls set up along roads in Raja Bazaar, Kashmiri Bazaar, Iqbal Road, Gunjmandi, Saidpur Road, Jamia Masjid Road, Moti Bazaar, Sabzi Mandi, Namak Mandi, Narankari Bazaar, Liaquat Road, College Road, Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Road, Asghar Mall Scheme, Sadiqabad, Muslim Town and Banni Chowk. The seized goods were later shifted to the Rawal Town Council offices. Chohan said the operation was aimed at removal of encroachments without any discrimination. “Our campaign is against both temporary and permanent encroachers,” he said. He said the RTMA staff had removed more than 60 billboards installed along Liaquat Road from Liaquat Bagh to Fawara Chowk, as these billboards were creating problems for pedestrians. He said the RTMA staff also whitewashed the wall chalking along Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Road, Saidpur Road, Pindora, Kuri Road, Sadiqabad, Rawal Road, Tipu Road and adjacent localities. He said RTMA would lodge cases against those whose names were written on the banners and wall chalking. He said they would also seize the goods displayed on footpaths. He said it was a common practice that some shopkeepers dumped their goods on footpaths and covered them with plastic sheets at nighttime. He warned that such goods would be confiscated during night operations by the RTMA. Chohan hoped that within two months they would clear the city roads and footpaths of encroachments. staff report
