LAHORE: Lahore District Consumer Court Judge Syed Maruf Ahmedali imposed a fine of Rs 5,038 on a local bakery in Garhi Shahu on Friday for selling a fruitcake with hair in it.

The petitioner, Fahad Noor, claimed that he had bought a cake from the bakery on April 28 for Rs 38, adding that when he started to eat the cake, he found a hair in it. He alleged that the company had prepared a defective and substandard product. Noor said that he sent a legal notice to the manager of the bakery demanding to pay the damages and also return the price of the cake, but he did not receive a reply.

He requested that the court direct the bakery to return the price of the cake and pay damages of Rs 280,000. The defendant’s counsel submitted that the purchase receipt did not make it clear that the cake was purchased from the specific bakery.

After hearing the respective arguments, the judge ordered the bakery to pay damages of Rs 5,000 and refund the price of the cake. He also ordered the bakery to issue proper receipts with information about the purchased product and the bakery’s address.
