THE Punjab University administration on Monday got 13 houses vacated from the illegal occupants in the residential colony of the university.

According to a press release, six of the occupied houses were I-type (7 marla) while seven were J-type (5 marla). Some of the houses were in the illegal occupation for the last 10 to 12 years. The houses were allotted to the university employees, who had further given them to some other people on rent.

PU Resident Officer (RO-I) Prof Dr Bashir Ahmad had sent notices to the illegal occupants several times and also got affidavits from them stating: “that they have been illegally living on rent in the houses actually allotted to the university employees and that they will vacate the same till Oct 12.” Later, the occupants were served another notice as some of them had not vacated the houses before the end of the deadline. At last, the university administration got all the houses vacated on Monday.

PU Vice-Chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran said the present administration of the university not only got rid of illegal groups in its hostels but it also got the houses, constructed for the employees, vacated from the illegal occupants. He said no qabza group would be tolerated on the campus. He also lauded the staff of RO office for their performance.

Prof Dr Bashir Ahmad said the houses would be allotted to the senior university employees on the basis of merit, adding that applications were being received from the employees in this regard.

PU council discusses annual, semester system: The Punjab University Academic Council discussed the annual system and semester system during a meeting held at the Institute of Biochemistry and Biotechnology (IBB), New Campus, on Monday.

The council decided that the decision regarding giving the option of adopting annual or semester system to the students of the departments/colleges/institutes of the university would be taken in the next meeting scheduled to be held in December.

The meeting, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran, also approved the launch of two new gold medals; Chaudhry Rasheed Ahmad Medal for first position in MSc Chemistry and Sardar Muhammad Iqbal Medal for LLB overall first position.

To an objection by Dr Sajid Ali on syllabi and credit hours of the Department of Social Work, the house constituted a committee, comprising Behavioural Sciences Dean Prof Dr Mugheesuddin Sheikh, Prof Dr Athar Amin, and Dr Zahid Javed to submit their recommendations on the issue.

On the suggestion of Dr Mansoor Sarwar, Dr Haris Rahseed and other members, it was decided that a separate meeting of professors and chairmen would be called to discuss the semester system in detail.

On the unanimous decision of the house, a committee comprising Dr Haris Rasheed, Dr Shaukat Ali and Dr Nayyar Raza Zaidi was constituted for the selection of some new members of the Advance Studies and Research Board (ASRB).

It was the second meeting of the PU Academic Council held under the chairmanship of Dr Mujahid Kamran in 2008. All the deans of faculties, principal officers, heads of various teaching departments and other members attended the meeting.

MIT exam result: The Punjab University has declared the result of Master of Information Technology (MIT), First Year, 1st Annual Examination, 2008. According to a press statement, 69 candidates had appeared in the exam and 49 were declared successful while result of two candidates was late.
