Former judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan Fakharuddin G Ebrahim has said that foreign countries’ financial aid will lead the country to economic chaos and push the nation further into slavery.

“Disparity is the reason for crises in the country,” he said while addressing a seminar titled “Resistance movements and its social impact”, at the Pakistan Institute of International Affairs auditorium on Thursday evening.

“The 62 per cent indirect taxes are imposed on poor people while the elite are being exempted from paying their due taxes,” he said, adding that the government was not interested in reducing its expenses.

He said that the current situation demanded that the Presidency and the government reduce their expenses and sacrifice for the country.

“Our condition is bad and the government has to demonstrate its act for the people of the country and if it didn’t, then they should remember that the people of the country will rise against them,” he warned.

Dr Syed Jaffer Ahmed of the University of Karachi said that democratic culture could not be nurtured in the country due to continuous interference by the United States.

He said that the country’s situation could not improve until the government stopped slavishly catering to the US interests. He also called for provincial autonomy, social justice and formation of a political party that could deal the problems of masses.
