SHC issues notices to Ministry of Environment, others on plea of Bahria Town

KARACHI: Sindh High Court on Tuesday issued notices to the Federal Ministry of Environment, chief secretary, environment protection agency and others on application filed by Bahria Town for appointment of Nazir to inspect the construction site of flyover and two underpasses at Clifton area.

Filing application for urgent hearing, Bahria Town counsel submitted that construction work of the project had entered into final stages prior to stay order of the court adding that due to suspension of the work not only it was causing great inconvenience to the general public but also environmental hazard.

He expressed apprehension that the existence of locality and surrounding buildings, including shopping malls, could be damaged if the project has not been allowed to conclude prior to monsoon. The court was prayed to appoint Nazir as commissioner to inspect the construction site with the assistance of the technical experts and submit report before the court for appropriate order in this regard.

SHC’s bench headed by Justice Irfan Saadat Khan after preliminary hearing of the application issued notices to KMC, ministry of environment, EPA and others for May 30.

It is pertinent to mention that KMC had challenged the SHC’s single bench stay order against construction work of underpass and flyover project at Clifton area, being financed and executed by the private builder and developer to facilitate people of Karachi.
