New buildings must be quake-resistant’

Karachi : Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui directed on Tuesday that while granting approval to the designs of new buildings in their jurisdictions, the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) and all cantonment boards of the metropolis must keep in mind the factor of earthquakes in the seismic zone.

He despatched letters to the SBCA and executive officers of the cantonment boards of Clifton, Faisal, Korangi, Malir and Manora, directing that all new buildings should be constructed keeping in view the possibility of earthquakes and in this regard the building control authorities have to play an important role.

“To safeguard the lives and properties of the people we should construct buildings while keeping in view the possibility of earthquakes in the metropolis,” he said, adding, “With proper coordination we would be able to face any disaster and also minimize the losses of lives and properties at great deal.”
