176 acres of transport department land under illegal possession, SA told

Karachi: The Sindh Assembly (SA) was informed on Tuesday that 176.20 acres of transport department land was under illegal possession on 36 different locations of districts of the province with major portion occupied by Rangers in Karachi. This was stated by Transport Minister Akhtar Hussain Jadoon in a written answer submitted in response to a question asked by MPA Nusrat Sehar Abbasi during the question-hour. He told the house that provincial government had not permitted 70CC motorcycle rickshaws. However 0.1 million of such rickshaws were in operation. In response to a query of MPA Zareen Majeed, Jadoon said soon the private contractors would start shuttle service in Karachi that will cater passengers to terminals. He said the transport department would construct new bus terminals in the province in 2011-12 at sites Thatta, Badin and Kambar-Shahdadkot (Miro Khan). Transport minister said CNG buses were viable for long routes; however, government was planning to introduce Euro-2 diesel buses that were ideal for longer routes. To a supplementary question, he said a feasibility report was being prepared for construction of 14 new bus terminals in the province. To another question, he said 0.3 million illegal licenses were issued transporters in the province.
