Chandni Chowk Flyover increases traffic woes

* Police say it is working hard to resolve traffic problems

RAWALPINDI: People were expecting smooth traffic on Murree Road following the inauguration of Chandni Chowk Flyover, but what they got was traffic mess.

The city traffic police devised a plan to close crossing at Naz Cinema and Kohati Bazaar due to intense traffic caused by the flyover.

Meanwhile, the traffic police is reviewing the situation and has conducted a survey to smooth flow of traffic on Murree Road, particularly near BBH, Naz Cinema and Kohati Bazaar.

Chief Traffic officer Ghulam Abbas Tarar told the media that the traffic police was working hard to resolve the traffic problems generated after the opening of the Chandni Chowk Flyover, adding that on experimental bases some crossings at the road would be closed.

On the other hand, citizens have protested against the announcement made by traffic police for closure of U-turns at 6th Road and Rehmanabad.

The traffic police should not only think about the convenience of car and wagon owners but should also take into account the woes of pedestrians as the closure of these two U-turns would multiply the miseries of general public, said a group of citizens.

“We are small traders and we have to go to the other side of the Murree Road by crossing it and if the U-turns are closed, we will have to take a long detour to reach our destinations,” said a group of small traders.

“Most of our educational institutions are located on the other side of the Murree Road and we have to cross the road on foot to proceed to our colleges. No crossing is made for pedestrians at 6th Road and Rehmanabad,” said a group of students.

Instead of closing U-turns, the traffic police should arrange for speed breakers at these two sites rather than closing the U-turns, demanded the citizens. onlin
