KARACHI: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan Sunday laid the foundation stone of Shahabuddin Market and a five-storey car-parking plaza behind Empress Market, Saddar.

Administrator Karachi Muhammad Hussain Syed, Municipal Commissioner Matanat Ali Khan, project engineer and other KMC high officials accompanied him.

The governor, on this occasion, said though this project was delayed for some time, the work had now begun and would be completed in time. He said timely completion of this project would not only solve the problem of shopkeepers of the market but also resolve the problems of car parking and traffic jam in Saddar area.

Administrator Karachi briefed the governor about the project. He said that besides the construction of the Shahabuddin Market, a five-storey car-parking plaza would be constructed under this project. The first phase of the project would be completed by December 2012 and over 176 shopkeepers would be gradually shifted to lower ground floor of the building, while ground floor would have 130 shops and these shops would be offered to business community though open auction.

A total of 159 shops would be constructed on the mezzanine floor of the building. The market would have wide corridors, while five storeys of the building would be allocated for car parking and 28 offices would be provided in the first floor.

The first phase of the project, which cost Rs 735 million, would provide parking facility for about 580 cars and hundreds of motorcycles in the plaza.

A new mosque will be constructed in place of the old mosque near the market. The governor also inspected the site of the project where the administrator briefed him about the development works presently underway in the city.
